“We don’t operate as per PM’s schedule, we have our own schedule,” said Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday responding to Congress’ allegations alleging that ECI awaits for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s schedule to complete.
The Election Commission (EC), an autonomous body which is responsible for administering election processes in India was allegedly accused by the Indian National Congress of waiting for PM Modi’s schedule to complete.
The Congress allegedly accused EC for deliberately delaying the announcement of poll dates so that PM Modi can announce a series of programmes and welfare measures. Congress had questioned on the working of the autonomous poll conducting body.
Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora, addressing a press conference last week had declared that the upcoming Lok Sabha Election won’t be affected amid the Indo-Pak tensions.
The upcoming general elections will be held in April-May this year.
“Enough time to announce poll dates”: EC
Sunil Arora (CEC) said, “Elections will be held on time.” When asked about the possible notification of the Lok Sabha poll dates, Arora said the media and the country would come to know of it through the “usual press conference”, as per general norm.
Over the past few months, Election Commission officials have been touring the country, assessing the poll preparedness and holding meetings to ensure a stress-free polling this Lok Sabha election season due to tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pulwama attack.
ECI officials also visited Jammu & Kashmir earlier this week.
