Vijay Rupani resigned as Gujarat’s Chief Minister on Saturday evening, in an unexpected move ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state’s Assembly election early next year.
At this point, it’s unclear what prompted Mr. Rupani’s departure.
Mr Rupani is the fourth BJP chief minister to retire in recent months, following the resignation of BS Yediyurappa as Karnataka’s chief minister in July and the double whammy in Uttarakhand, when Tirath Singh Rawat resigned just four months after succeeding Trivendra Rawat.
