The Uttar Pradesh government has extended the state’s current partial “corona curfew” until May 17 due to an increase in the state’s regular cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), declared additional chief secretary (ACS) Navneet Sehgal on Sunday.
The announcement, which was presumably made during a summary meeting presided over by chief minister Yogi Adityanath, marks yet another extension of the ‘corona curfew,’ which was originally supposed to be a weekend curfew and was to be in place from 8 p.m. on Friday to 7 a.m. on Monday of the following week. However, on April 29, the government extended the curfew for a further 24 hours, until 7 a.m. on May 4. It was later extended until May 6 and then until May 10.
Though it was not entirely clear what restrictions and relaxations would be implemented, officials told the Hindustan Times that the regulations that were in force during the earlier phases would most likely remain in place. Earlier phases permitted critical and emergency services such as medical services, pharmacy shops, vegetable shops, continuous process industries, and so on to operate “as normal.”
In addition to the lockdown, all districts with more than 500 active coronavirus cases are subject to a regular night curfew.
According to a health department bulletin, Uttar Pradesh reported 26,847 new positive cases and 298 associated deaths on Saturday, bringing the state’s infection count to 1,480,315. There have been 1,219,409 recoveries, 245,736 active cases, and 15,170 deaths as a result of this.
