On Tuesday, a resolution recognising the devastating impact of Covid-19 in India and expressing the House of Representatives’ sense of urgent assistance was passed unanimously by the US House. There were 41 co-sponsors of the bipartisan resolution, 17 from the Committee on Foreign Affairs of this House.
The resolution acknowledges that, in the United States, the export ban for certain therapeutics in response to a request from the United States was raised when the number of Covid–19 cases rose devastatingly.
It also stated that the pharmaceutical industry in India is a vital part of the global pandemic solution and accounts for more than half of international vaccine production.
Last month, Congressman Brad Sherman, Democratic Co-Chair of the House of House Caucus on India and the Americans, and Rep. Steve Chabot introduced the resolution ‘Expressing the Administration to help address the devastating impact Covid-19 has had on India’
“The resolution stands with the people of India as they collectively work to stem the spread of Covid-19,” said Congressman Sherman. “The US must work with our partners around the world to quell the virus everywhere it persists.”
Congressman Sherman worked, alongside Republican Co-Chair Steve Chabot to address the devastating results of this second wave of Covid 19 in the Indian region, as a senior member of the House of Foreign Affairs Committee and the Democratic Co-Chair of the Indian Caucus.
In April, the white House officially requested that its aid to the fight against Covid-19 be strengthened, as reps Steve Chabot, Ro Khanna, Michael Waltz and other members join Sherman. By early May, the US had provided India with more than $100 million in medical supplies, including oxygen, personal protective equipment (PPE), rapid diagnostic tests, and therapeutics.
