Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of the AIMIM and a member of Parliament, stated on Sunday that his party will run for 100 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2022. Owaisi further stated that his party will run in the elections in collaboration with Om Prakash Rajbhar, the patron of the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP), and his ‘Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha.’

In a series of tweets, the AIMIM chief said, “We’ve decided to contest 100 seats in the upcoming UP election. Party has begun the selection process of candidates.”

We are in alliance with Om Prakash Rajbhar’s Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha. We have not talked about elections or alliance with any other party yet,” he added.

The Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha comprises eight other groups, including Krishna Patel’s Apna Dal, Jan Adhikar Party, and Chandrashekar Ravan’s Azad Samaj Party, in addition to AIMIM and SBSP.

The AIMIM ran for and won five seats in the Bihar Assembly elections last year, all in the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal area, which shares a border with West Bengal.

The party, on the other hand, failed to win any seats in the recent assembly elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, where it ran candidates for seven and three seats, respectively.

In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, the party also won two seats.

AIMIM has previously called on all “secular” parties in Uttar Pradesh, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi, to join forces to prevent the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from maintaining power.

Owaisi visited Varanasi in January, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now a member of Parliament. During his visit, Owaisi stated that his party, the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha, will battle the BJP hard.

The AIMIM ran candidates for 38 seats in the 2017 assembly elections, but it did not win any of them.
