The Managing Director of Twitter India, Manish Maheshwari, has been sent with a legal notice by the Uttar Pradesh Police Department in relation to the viral video of an old man being assaulted in Loni. After the microblogging service “let the anti-social messages go viral,” the MD was requested to record his statement.

The managing director has been given seven days to appear to the Police Station Loni Border and record a statement on the subject, according to the legal notice.

“Some people used their Twitter handle as a tool to spread hatred in the society and Twitter Communication India and Twitter Inc did not take any action against it. They let the anti-social messages go viral,” the notice sent to the managing director read.

This comes after Twitter’s status as an intermediate platform in India was revoked due to new IT regulations. According to reports, Twitter is the only prominent social media network that has not complied with the new regulations.

According to reports, if Twitter is charged with publishing allegedly illegal information, it will be considered as a publisher, not an intermediary, and will be subject to penalty under any legislation, including the IT Act as well as the country’s criminal laws.

On May 31, a senior-level team from the Delhi Police’s Special Cell questioned Manish Maheshwari, the managing director of Twitter India, in Bengaluru about the ‘Congress toolkit case.’
