A week after being temporarily suspended for posting photographs of the family of a nine-year-old victim of suspected rape and murder in Northwest Delhi, Twitter has restored Rahul Gandhi’s account, as well as those of the Congress and its other leaders. The action came a day after he took to Twitter to vent his frustrations.
“The accounts of all members of Congress have been unlocked. Twitter has not stated an explanation for the unlocking “The Congress’s in-charge of social media accounts, Rohan Gupta, informed NDTV.
The party also emphasised that its Twitter account had not been removed.
The uploading of photographs of the alleged rape victim’s family had already been ruled a breach of Twitter’s guidelines.
In retaliation, the former Congress chief accused Twitter of “interfering in the national political process” and that his account’s suspension was a “attack on the country’s democratic system.”
Mr Gandhi claimed that Twitter was not a neutral and objective platform and was “beholden to the government” in a YouTube video statement titled “Twitter’s deadly game.”
He questioned Twitter’s decision to lock his handle, claiming that millions of his followers were being denied the freedom to express themselves unfairly.
“It’s clearly clear that Twitter isn’t a neutral or objective platform.” It’s an unbalanced platform. It’s something that pays attention to what the current government says,” he claimed.
Following the squabble with the Congress, Twitter’s India leader, Manish Maheshwari, was relocated to the United States. Maheshwari was the subject of a FIR filed in Uttar Pradesh in connection with an investigation into a video of an alleged hate crime.
While the company did not provide an explanation for the shift, it did state that Maheshwari will relocate to the United States as Senior Director (Revenue Strategy and Operations) and focus on new markets in his new position.
