Three terrorists were killed in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sopore on Sunday night, including a top commander of the terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), according to police. A joint operation by the army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the Central Reserve Police Force resulted in the gunfight (CRPF).
“Top LeT terrorist Mudasir Pandit who was involved in the killing of three policemen, two councillors and two civilians recently, has been killed in the Sopore encounter. A total of three LeT terrorists have been killed in the encounter,” said inspecter general of police Vijay Kumar
Following a terror attack in Sopore on June 12, security forces launched several operations in and around the town. Terrorists from the LeT launched an attack that was widely condemned across the political spectrum.
When a police party led by sub-inspector Mukesh Kumar was stationed in the main town to enforce Covid appropriate behaviour, the attack occurred. Two of the four police officers, constables Waseem and Showkat, were killed in the attack, according to Director General of Police Dilbag Singh.
Three civilians were injured in the incident, including those who set up a roadside handcart. In the hospitals, two of them died.
“Strongly condemn the terror attack on civilians and security personnel at Sopore, Baramulla. My sincere condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in this attack. Praying for the early recovery of the injured,” Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha had said on Twitter after the attack.
He said the perpetrators of violence are the “enemies of humanity” and “such despicable and cowardly acts will not go unpunished”.
Omar Abdullah, a former chief minister and vice-president of the National Conference (NC), said such attacks must be condemned categorically.
