The Odisha government has planned to employ 10,000 contractual teachers in high schools across the state via online competitive examinations to recruit quality teachers and fill vacancies in secondary schools.
The Directorate of Secondary Education has submitted a proposal to the School and Mass Education Department for approval in this regard. If approved, it will be the first recruitment drive of its kind in Odisha. There will be a significant number of teachers selected using a computer-based test (CBT).
After a thorough discussion, the Mass Education Department’s technical committee has requested permission from the government. It would hire an agency to conduct the teacher evaluations.
The Finance Department has accepted a proposal to fill 4,445 vacancies in secondary schools for Hindi, Sanskrit, and Physical Education teachers.
Similarly, the Directorate of Secondary Education noted in a letter to the Mass Education Department that clearance for filling roughly 6,000 TGT (Trained Graduate Teachers) positions is in process.
Teachers for Hindi, Sanskrit, and Physical Education were recruited by the government in 2016. TGTs were recruited in 2019-20. During that time, 1300 teachers were appointed to fill 2,740 advertised positions.
Since then, there has been no recruitment that has resulted in large-scale vacancies across the state.
According to data from District Education Officers (DEOs), 12,500 teaching posts in various courses, including TGTs, Hindi, Sanskrit, and PET, are vacant in schools across the state, accounting for 34% of the sanctioned positions.
