The Tamil Nadu government has acquainted a correction with the Tamil Nadu Subordinate Police Officers’ Conduct Rules, making badgering of LGBTQ+ people by the state police a culpable offense by regulation.
Through an administration request delivered on January 29, 2022, S K Prabakar, Additional Chief Secretary to Government, said the correction was added to the Tamil Nadu Subordinate Police Officers’ Conduct Rules 1964, where rule 24C will be added underneath rule 24B of the direct standards, which expresses that cops should not bug LGBTQ+ people and those working for the local area’s prosperity.
“No cop will enjoy any demonstration of badgering of any individual having a place with the LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual + Community and the people working for the government assistance of the said local area,” the request read.
The request additionally added that with the end goal of this standard, “badgering does exclude the right of police to make any enquiry according to the strategy laid out by regulation.”
Last year, the Madras High Court had guided the police to abstain from bugging LGBTQ+ activists, NGOs and individuals from the local area.
