On Monday, the Delhi Police declared a reward of Rs 1 lakh for details leading to the arrest of Sushil Kumar, India’s two-time Olympic medalist, in connection with the murder of Sagar Rana, a 23-year-old wrestler, in Delhi. For details about Sushil’s associate Ajay Kumar, a Rs 50 lakh cash reward has been revealed.
After the death of Sagar Rana on May 5, Sushil Kumar has been on the run. The senior wrestler has been charged with robbery, kidnapping, and criminal conspiracy. On Saturday, the Rohini court in Delhi released non-bailable warrants against Sushil.
After raiding his home, Delhi Police had returned empty-handed. Sushil went to Haridwar and then Rishikesh to avoid being arrested, according to reports. To apprehend him, raids were carried out in the Delhi-NCR area and neighbouring states.
On May 4, Sagar Rama, who was studying at Delhi’s historic Chhatrasal Stadium, died and two of his friends were hospitalised after they were reportedly attacked by Sushil Kumar and other wrestlers on the Chhatrasal Stadium grounds.
Sushil Kumar was allegedly present at the scene when the incident occurred, according to the victims. Sushil and his friends allegedly kidnapped Sagar from his Model Town home to teach him a lesson for badmouthing him in front of other wrestlers, according to the victims’ accounts.
Wrestler Sushil, on the other hand, refuted the accusation on May 5, claiming that his wrestlers were not involved in the clash inside Chhatrasal Stadium.
Wrestler Sushil is considered one of the country’s most promising athletes, having won a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics and a bronze medal four years prior in the Beijing Olympics.
