On Monday, Mumbai reported 2,624 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours, the city’s lowest one-day spike in over 5 weeks. According to official reports, the number of Covid tests dropped from a daily average of 50,000 to 38,000 on Sunday.
The city’s death toll now stands at 13,372, with 78 new deaths recorded in the last 24 hours. On Monday, the cumulative number of infections in Mumbai crossed 6,58,621.
On March 17, Mumbai recorded 2,377 new coronavirus cases. Following that, as the more serious second wave of the pandemic gripped Maharashtra and the rest of the world, the daily estimates skyrocketed to thousands of cases every day.
Mumbai was one of the worst-affected cities in the world last month.
Last month, Maharashtra reported over 60,000 coronavirus cases in a single day. On Monday, the state reported 48,621 new cases. The number of recoveries exceeded the number of cases – 59,500 people were released within 24 hours.
In Maharashtra, the recovery rate is 84.7 percent, while the event fatality rate is 1.49 percent. The percentage of covid positive people is 17.12%.
The increase in deaths remains a major concern, with Maharashtra reporting 567 fatalities in a single day.
Pune is the worst-affected region in the state, with 7,718 cases and 10 deaths every day. Nagpur is ranked second on the list, with 5,350 cases and 13 fatalities.
The government said in a statement that 39,08,491 people are currently in-home quarantine and 28,593 people are in institutional quarantine.
To combat the virus outbreak, the Maharashtra government enforced weekend lockdowns and lockdown-like controls.
Last week, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that if the restrictions had not been introduced, the state would have seen nine to ten lakh active cases.
On total lockdown, he said, “…we will not reach that point.”
Devendra Fadnavis, the Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra, said last week that the falling daily tallies were due to low testing.
