Tina Dabi and Athar Aamir Khan, IAS officials whose wedding in 2018 made news and was attended by senior politicians, are now divorced. Their divorce plea was approved by a family court in Jaipur.
Tina Dabi won the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil service test in 2015, while Athar Khan ranked second. Their love story and wedding were right out of a movie.
According to reports, the two filed for divorce with mutual consent at the family court in November.
Tina Dabi and Athar Khan are Rajasthan cadre officers who were assigned to Jaipur. Athar Khan is now on deputation with the government of Jammu and Kashmir and is based in Srinagar.
Tina Dabi, a graduate of Delhi’s Lady Shri Ram College, rose to prominence after being the first Dalit to pass the coveted civil services test on her first try. During their training, she met Athar Khan, a Kashmiri from Anantnag. In April 2018, the couple married in Delhi.
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Union Ministers, and then-Local Assembly Speaker Sumitra Mahajan all attended their wedding celebration in Delhi.
The interfaith wedding made headlines and sparked outrage on social media at a time when the country was grappling with religious strife and “love jihad,” a term used by the rightwing to characterise Muslim men’s ploy to seduce Hindu women and compel them to convert.
Ms Dabi, on the other hand, said that she was unaffected by the commotion and that her marriage was beyond religious divisions.
