In an encounter with terrorists alleged to be members of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang-Yung Aung) in the Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, one trooper of the Assam Rifles paramilitary force was killed and two others were wounded.
An altercation between security forces and rebels at Longvi village under Nampong circle in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh resulted in the martyrdom of one Assam Rifles jawan and the injuries of two others, said Changlang Deputy Commissioner Devansh Yadav.
“A column of Assam Rifles was launched to carry out an operation around 9 am. Suddenly, the soldiers came under heavy firing in which the jawan was martyred after receiving bullet injury,” said a police source.
The wounded jawans were airlifted to the army hospital, he said.
According to the district governor, security forces have conducted a major counter-insurgency campaign to clear the city of terrorists.
The incident occurred about 8 kilometres from Longvi village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Nampong circle.
Various groups of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, or NSCN, have been among the northeastern outfits that have waged civil war against the government for the past six decades.
Following a 1997 dialogue, the central government concluded a formal peace agreement with the majority of the parties, the NSCN-IM, in 2015. The cease-fire, however, hit snags last year, but the party recently said that negotiations are back on track.
