According to a report by NYT, the team that killed Jamal Khashoggi was part of a wider push to crush Saudi dissent that involved at least a dozen operations since 2017.

According to a report released on Sunday by The New York Times, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) of Saudi Arabia was directly involved in coordinating a team to intimidate, detain, kidnap and surveil dissenters in Saudi.

It majorly puts a spotlight on the members of the team that were allegedly involved in the murder of senior journalist Jamal Khashoggi last year.

The secret campaign led by Saudi Arabia’s powerful Crown Prince MBS included surveillance, kidnapping, detention and torture of Saudis, said the report which cited US officials who have read classified intelligence reports about the effort.

American officials referred to it as the Saudi Rapid Intervention Group, the Times said.

At least some of the clandestine missions were carried out by members of the team that killed and dismembered Khashoggi in October at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, suggesting his murder was part of a wider campaign against dissidents, the report said, citing the US officials and associates of some Saudi victims.
