A group of students from Gwalior launched a campaign, they wrote messages on sanitary napkins to Prime Minister urging him to remove the 12 per cent Goods and Services Tax on the pads. The students says that 1,000 napkins with their messages written on them will be collected and sent to the Prime Minister. The campaign was launched on January 4 and has been spreading through social media. “Sanitary napkins have been placed under 12% GST. Instead of giving subsidy, it has been placed under the luxury item category. Therefore, we have started this campaign aiming to send 1,000 pads to the government by March 3,” Hari Mohan, a student said.
He added if the clean napkins are made available for free then the women will stay healthy. In the rural areas of the country, poor women has to deal with the menstrual cycle issues and use unhygienic means and because of that they have to suffer from various diseases.
The students from gwalior believe that it is not only the need of women belonging to Gwalior, but the entire nation is in need of this move and Prime Minister Modi is the only leader who can reduce the cost by eliminating the GST from it or make it available for free.
