In one of his tweets, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in relation to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, “Taking inspiration from the National Education Policy, now efforts will be made to teach all technical education subjects in the mother tongue, including engineering and medicine”. Madhya Pradesh is going to be the first state in the country to start MBBS in Hindi medium by taking innovation and historical initiative in the field of education. It is natural that in this educational ritual, the intention of the government, the hard work of qualified educationists and the dream of the honorable Prime Minister is going to come true, then on this unprecedented initiative, not only in the country but also in the global scenario, there will definitely be serious thinking along with welcome.
Under the Indian education system, in the higher education system, the mother tongue and Indian languages were not given or given the importance they deserve. Generally this process of learning and teaching has been subject to a foreign language. But the advent of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has ushered in a major change.
In the present time which is the nectar of independence and the nation is witnessing its cultural, religious, social and spiritual renaissance norms, it has become necessary that we should use and pay attention to mother tongue or regional languages as the medium of higher education.
The talk of education in the mother tongue has been going on since the time of Lord Macaulay. This demand continued from time to time even in independent India, such as the Radhakrishnan Committee report in 1948-49, which we know as the University Education Commission, that report also recommended that “the English should be replaced with Indian language as soon as possible.” After this, the Official Language Commission, Emotional Integration Committee, NEP 1968, NEP (1986/1992) and now in NEP 2020, giving priority and priority to education in mother tongue and regional languages only. It has been said to give. The current education policy recommends that institutions of higher education should use mother tongue or local language as the medium of instruction or conduct bilingual courses. Thereby, it will help in providing quality education to maximum number of students, and increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education. With this, the power, usefulness and vitality of all Indian languages will be maintained. When this thing starts from the national level then surely private institutions will also be motivated to use Indian languages as medium of instruction or to introduce bilingual courses. This innovative experiment will ensure that there is no difference between government and private institutions.
Teachers’ training programme, four-year Bachelor of Education dual degree will also be bilingual. This will facilitate the training of cadres of teachers of all subjects. Science and mathematics teachers will also adopt a bilingual approach to teaching. Develop high quality teaching and print materials in Indian languages including textbooks, workbooks, videos, plays, poems, novels and magazines to bring the recommendations into compliance. This will be made possible by creating quality programs in translation and interpretation. In Madhya Pradesh, for this purpose, while doing innovative experiments in the field of medical education, books on Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology have been published in Hindi under the first year course, which will be released by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This is a historic step which will dispel the concept that higher education is possible only in English, realizing the Prime Minister’s resolve that the medium of instruction should be the mother tongue. Come, let us all be a witness to this unprecedented and historic opportunity of medical education and feel proud that our state is the first state in the country where along with engineering, medical education is also being started in mother tongue.
