Raj Kundra and his Information Technology (IT) chief Ryan Thorpe were granted bail by a municipal court in Mumbai on Monday on a 50,000 surety.
Raj Kundra, the husband of Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, was detained in July and a charge sheet was filed against him last week for his alleged involvement in a pornographic film scam.
Kundra told the Mumbai Metropolitan Magistrate Court that the films were filmed with the ‘actors’ agreement and that he only owned the mobile app Hotshots for ten months when he applied for bail in the case.
The Hotshots mobile app was created to allow Kundra’s company to stream sexual and obscene videos.
Raj Kundra was charged with cheating and obscene and indecent advertising and exhibitions under different sections of the Indian Penal Code by Mumbai Police, who described him as a “key conspirator.”
Kundra was also charged under the Information Technology Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
The businessman, along with eleven others, was detained on July 19 for their suspected involvement in the creation of pornographic videos using an app called Hotshots.
Kundra received nearly Rs. 1.17 crore from Hotshots app subscribers on Apple’s App Store between August and December 2020, according to Mumbai Police’s detention application at the time.
