Rahul Gandhi will address three rallies in Assam beginning Friday to raise the party’s campaign momentum, and the party manifesto will be released on Saturday.
This will be Rahul Gandhi’s first visit to poll-bound Assam since the election dates were announced. Rahul Gandhi will hold three election rallies in Upper and Northern Assam during his two-day visit.
On Friday morning, Rahul Gandhi met with college students in Dibrugarh’s Lahowal district before heading to the Dinjoy tea estate in Chabua to consult with tea garden staff.
Rahul Gandhi will also hold his first election rally since the poll dates were declared on Friday in Doomdooma, Tinsukia district. Rahul Gandhi will speak at two election rallies on Saturday: Mariani in Jorhat district and Gohpur in Sonitpur district.
On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi will also issue the Congress election manifesto at the Assam Pradesh Congress Office.
Earlier that day, on February 14, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Upper Assam’s Sivasagar district and declared that his party would never support the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and would not allow it to be implemented.
Rahul Gandhi also declared at the meeting that if his party wins power, he would give Rs 365 to every tea garden worker in Assam.
The Congress party has declared five “guarantees” for the Assam assembly election, including a bill that repeals the CAA, 5 lakh government employment, raising tea workers’ salaries to Rs 365, providing free electricity up to 200 units per family, and providing Rs 2,000 monthly income support to all housewives.
This is the second time Gandhi would be campaigning in Assam. Earlier, his sister and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had also campaigned for the party in the state and met tea estate workers.
Priyanka Gandhi, his sister and party leader, will also visit the state as part of the Congress’ drive.
According to the news agency ANI, she is expected to organise six rallies on March 21 and 22. “She will stage rallies in Assam’s Jorhat, Golaghat, and Nagaon districts,” sources told the Associated Press. She had previously visited the Kamakhya Temple and worked with tea garden staff at Biswanath’s Sadharu tea farm.
Assembly elections for Assam’s 126-member house will take place in three stages, on March 27, April 1, and April 6, with results expected on May 2.
