After having minor signs of the infection, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday.
Taking to Twitter, Gandhi wrote: “After experiencing mild symptoms, I’ve just tested positive for COVID. All those who’ve been in contact with me recently, please follow all safety protocols and stay safe.”
Gandhi was at his home on the recommendation of physicians, according to unidentified authorities. In the last 12 days, the Congress MP has not seen his mother, Sonia Gandhi, or the party’s leader. Rahul Gandhi has not seen his sister, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in five days, according to his aides.
Manmohan Singh, a Congress leader, and former Prime Minister was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi on Monday after testing positive for the infection. Harsh Vardhan, the Union Health Minister, said Singh’s condition was stable on Tuesday.
Several leaders expressed their best wishes for Gandhi’s health. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sympathy to the Lok Sabha MP and wished him a speedy recovery.
India is dealing with a serious second wave of the novel coronavirus, with many leaders reportedly contracting the infection.
Kiren Rejiju, the Union Sports Minister, is on the list, as are K Chandrasekhar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana, and Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh. On Monday, former Prime Minister and senior Congress chief Manmohan Singh tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi.
Meanwhile, India recorded 2,59,170 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, bringing the total number of infections since the pandemic began in January 2020 to 1,53,21,089. With 1,761 deaths, the total number of people killed has risen to 1,80,530. This represents the largest number of deaths in a single day since the outbreak began.
