Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with the Council of Ministers on Wednesday to review the country’s overall Covid-19 situation and discuss the ongoing vaccination programme, according to people familiar with the situation. The Prime Minister may also conduct a review of some ministries’ performance.
The performance review usually precedes a cabinet reshuffle, and the buzz surrounding today’s virtual meeting has fueled speculation that the Prime Minister will indeed expand the Union Cabinet. The drill is expected to take place before Parliament’s monsoon session begins next month.
PM Modi’s strength is 60 and is expected to rise to 79.
PM Modi met with the chief ministers of a number of states, including Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, both of which are in the midst of election campaigns.
The expected agenda, on the other hand, is to discuss the Centre’s various initiatives to combat the coronavirus disease (Covid-19). On the condition of anonymity, a senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) functionary told that the Prime Minister may ask the ministers at today’s meeting to spread the word to the public about the government’s efforts to alleviate people’s pain and problems..
On Monday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced eight new schemes to help the economy recover from the pandemic-related shutdowns. As part of the package to support the economy, Sitharaman announced 1.5 lakh crore in additional credit for small and medium businesses, more funds for the healthcare sector, loans to tourism agencies and guides, and a waiver of visa fees for foreign tourists.
The central government is working hard to dispel the myth that it is unprepared for the second wave of Covid-19, and the meeting is a step in that direction. The BJP, too, has begun making preparations to alter public perception.
