According to the National Centre of Seismology, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit the northeastern state at about 7:51 a.m. on Wednesday, 43 kilometers west of Tezpur.
Six aftershocks were also felt in the state over the next two hours. Strong tremors shook other northeastern areas as well as Bhutan’s neighboring mountainous region.
“This earthquake was the largest I can remember; there was a huge jolt and then a smaller one,” a police official told media.
“Our entire multi-story apartment has sustained massive destruction, with roofs and walls collapsing,” a businessman who lives there said.
