In the face of a record increase in COVID-19 incidents, the Delhi government has enforced a full lockdown in the city from Monday night (April 19) to Monday morning (April 26). The six-day lockdown in the national capital will begin at 10 p.m. tonight and last until 5 a.m. next Monday, according to CM Arvind Kejriwal.
Following a meeting between Lieutenant Anil Baijal and CM Kejriwal on Monday morning (April 19), Kejriwal made the formal announcement about the full lockdown in Delhi.
On Sunday, April 18, the national capital saw the largest increase in its daily coronavirus tally, with 25,462 new cases and a positivity rate of about 30%, suggesting one out of every three samples screened in Delhi is positive.
From April 16 until Monday morning (April 19), the national capital was under a full weekend curfew.
In an effort to crack the chain of the COVID-19 infection in the national capital, CM Kejriwal declared sweeping restrictions on April 15, including a weekend curfew and the closing of malls, gymnasiums, spas, and auditoriums.
He also stated that hospital beds in Delhi are plentiful, with over 5,000 still available for COVID patients.
The explanation for enforcing a weekend curfew, according to Kejriwal, is that people frequently engage in recreational and other such events over the weekend, which could be “curtailed” and “curbed” without causing them too much inconvenience.
To combat the spread of the coronavirus, Delhi has already enforced a full night curfew in the city from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. until April 30.
According to Kejriwal, the number of cases in Delhi is increasing every day, and regulations are required to stop the virus from spreading.
The curfew comes a day after Delhi announced a new high of 25,462 COVID-19 cases and 161 deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of active cases in the city to 74,941.
On Sunday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that only about 100 intensive care units (ICUs) are operational in the capital’s hospitals.
