On Thursday, Maharashtra announced 43,183 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the state’s total to 28,56,163, according to ANI, citing government numbers. From the previous day’s total of 39,544 events, the single-day total has risen once more. However, from 1,67,078 on Wednesday, the number of tests performed increased to 1,83,198 on Thursday.
The death toll increased from 227 on Wednesday to 249 on Thursday, bringing the total to 54,898. The cumulative number of active cases was 3,66,533.
According to the civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the state capital Mumbai saw a record high rise of 8,646 incidents, with 18 people dead. Mumbai, too, saw a higher number of experiments on Thursday, with 46,758 samples checked compared to 41,363 on Wednesday. According to the Hindustan Times, the Dharavi slum district, which was a hotspot of infections during the first wave of the pandemic, has registered 71 new cases.
According to official statistics, 3,630 people tested positive in Nagpur district, with 60 people dying as a result of the infection. According to Maharashtra government data for district-wise breakdown, Pune district reported 8,025 new cases and 18 deaths in the last 24 hours, down from 8,605 cases and 56 deaths on Wednesday.
According to PTI, Sanjay Oak, the state’s Covid-19 task force chief, emphasized the significance of preserving Covid-appropriate behavior on Thursday. Maharashtra should be allowed to execute door-to-door vaccinations, he said.
“One patient can infect at least 400 people,” Oak said while speaking to reporters. “Hence, there is no alternative to wearing mask, hygiene and social distancing.”
Maharashtra, which has been hit by a second wave of Covid, has tightened controls in recent weeks to prevent the virus from spreading, including a state-wide night curfew. Some state ministers and the BJP have said that other choices should be considered after Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked officials last week to brace for a potential lockdown if the cases continue to grow.
The Health Ministry said today that Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Punjab, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh continue to see a sharp increase in daily new cases, accounting for 84.61 percent of new cases recorded in a 24-hour span.
