Antigua and Barbuda were received by the fleeting businessman Mehul Choksi early Thursday morning, three days after he received medical bail from the Dominica High Court.
Choksi has been known to land in an air ambulance at VC Bird International Airport, in Antigua, around 3.30 pm on Wednesday morning in the Caribbean time, which was followed by foreign ministry officials.
Armed with the Dominican court order granting him medical care in Antigua until he is fit for relocation, Choksi had no problems with immigration authorities, people familiar with developments said.
His lawyer Vijay Aggarwal said – “My client Mehul Choksi has returned to his home in Antigua safely. He faced no issues while entering back in Antigua. He is receiving medical treatment and his family is feeling relieved however torture during kidnapping has him caused lot of psychological and physical harm. All well that ends well. After tasting success in Dominica Now legal team is gearing up for long drawn fight in Antigua”.
The day after his family members claimed to have been abducted Choksi was missing from Antigua, whose citizenship he holds, on 23 May. The authorities in Dominica were 200 km away.
Indeed, he was a prohibited immigrant from Dominica, and there he is faced with charges for his deportation from Dominica.
On 28 May an Indian team flew to Dominica with the hope that it would be deported. In Dominica, however, Choksi filed a habeas corpus for abduction and torture in the high court. The Royal Antigua Police Force investigates the allegations of abduction.
All three governments – India, Dominica and Antigua – have rejected these allegations.
The Indian government claims that Choksi masterminded a $952 million (always 7,080 crore) Punjab National Bank scam and continues to be an Indian citizen, because his statement on the resignation of citizenry has never been accepted by the Home Affairs Ministry (MHA).
