Mamata Banerjee seems prepared to win a third term in Bengal, while the DMK is poised to win in Tamil Nadu, the BJP is leading in Assam, and the LDF is leading in Kerala in the counting of votes for state elections. Warning: these very early lead.
According to the most recent Election Desk projection, the Trinamool is on track to win 205+ seats in Bengal, 140+ for the DMK in Tamil Nadu, 90+ for the BJP in Assam, and Kerala, and 90 for the Left.
Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has passed the halfway mark in early leads in Bengal, leading in 206 constituencies, despite the fact that the BJP seems to have made strides after the 2019 national elections. The Chief Minister’s Trinamool Congress and the BJP ran a no-holds-barred drive that violated both Covid safety laws and the election code. However, Mamata Banerjee is trailing the BJP’s Suvendhu Adhikari – a former close aide – in Nandigram, the most closely watched election in Bengal.
In Assam, the BJP leads in 78 of the 126 seats, well ahead of its closest competitor, the Congress, which worked hard to retake its former stronghold.
In Tamil Nadu, the DMK has taken an early lead over the ruling AIADMK, which has an alliance with the BJP. MK Stalin’s DMK and its allies have 141 seats, while the AIDMK has 92.
In Kerala, the incumbent LDF is leading in 91 of the 140 seats and seems to be on track to defy a 40-year cycle if the current trend persists. The UDF, headed by Congress, already has a 45-seat majority.
In Puducherry, N Rangaswamy’s AINRC-led coalition, of which the BJP is a member, holds 11 of the 30 assembly seats, while the Congress holds six.
These elections were held in March and April, just as India began registering thousands of new coronavirus infections every day. There were less than 25,000 new cases a day on March 14, two weeks before the first process began. On March 27, there were approximately 62,000 people, and by April 29, there were well over 3.5 lakh people a day. On Saturday, the number of new cases reached a record daily high of 401,993, the most in the world.
Along with the Covid increase, leaders from all political parties, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, led political rallies where huge crowds disregarded safety standards such as masks and social distancing.
All triumph parades have been prohibited by the Election Commission. Candidates will also be barred from entering polling stations until they have either a negative Covid report (no older than 48 hours) or evidence that they have administered all vaccination shots.
