Mamata Banerjee, the incumbent Chief Minister of West Bengal, will take the oath for the third time on May 5. Mamata Banerjee will be sworn in as Chief Minister of West Bengal at 10.45 a.m., according to West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Meanwhile, TMC chief Partha Chatterjee briefed the reporters, saying, “Mamata Banerjee has been unanimously elected as the TMC’s leader. She will take the oath of office as Chief Minister on May 5. The oath-taking ceremony for newly elected lawmakers will take place on May 6. Biman Banerjee should be elected Speaker of the Assembly. Subrata Mukherjee, meanwhile, has been appointed as the pro-tem speaker.”
The Governor wrote in a tweet, “Taking note of communication @AITCofficial electing @MamataOfficial as leader of 17th WB Legislative Assembly have invited her to take oath of office of Chief Minister on May 5 at 10.45 am at Raj Bhawan. In view of current Covid situation function will be with limited audience.”
When asked how Mamata Banerjee would become chief minister after losing her seat in Nandigram, the TMC leader said, “The Election Commission is still looking into the situation. There is also a clause of the constitution. There will be no obstacles…no one will be able to prevent Mamata Banerjee from becoming Chief Minister.”
According to Article 164 (4) of the Indian Constitution, a minister who is not a member of the state legislature for six consecutive months ceases to be a minister at the end of that time.
Mamata Banerjee said on Monday that the Returning Officer of the Assembly seat said he was threatened against recounting votes after her defeat in Nandigram.
The chief minister stated that the oath-taking ceremony would be kept low-key in light of the pandemic. She also claimed that many party leaders had congratulated her on her landslide win.
“Arvind Kejriwal, Uddhav Thackeray, Captain Amarinder Singh, Bhupinder Singh Hooda JI, Rajnikanth JI, Omar Abdullah, and others called and wished me. The people of Bengal have stopped the destructive force,” Mamata said.
In the recently concluded West Bengal assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress captured 213 seats. In the 294-seat state assembly, the Bharatiya Janata Party won 77 votes. Elections for two seats in Murshidabad, however, have been postponed due to the death of candidates as a result of COVID.
The BJP, Mamata Banerjee’s biggest opponent, won 77 seats, while the ISF, which ran under the banner of the Rashtriya Secular Majlis Party, and an Independent each won one seat. In 2016, the TMC secured 211 seats.
