Maharashtra Chief Minister (CM) Uddhav Thackeray has appealed for restraint, citing growing resentment among restaurant owners and shopkeepers in districts where the Maharashtra government has not relaxed the lockdown. He also stated that the government is considering various options for resuming public local train travel.
This came on the heels of the state reporting 6,695 new cases and 120 deaths on Thursday, bringing the total number of cases to 6,336,220.
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Thackeray stated that all decisions will be made with the goal of protecting people’s lives. He emphasised that the Covid-19 situation in the state has not yet been fully resolved.
“The lockdown isn’t permanent,” Thackeray said at the inauguration of a municipal ward office in Bandra. When are the local [trains] going to start? We’re weighing our options. Other districts will benefit from the same relaxation that we have given to shops and establishments. However, we will remember our responsibilities [to people] and then provide the rest.” Thackeray stated that he could address the state on these issues via social media in the near future.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, 217,905 tests were completed, with 7,120 recoveries.
In Maharashtra, there are currently 74,995 active cases, with a total of 74,995 deaths since the outbreak began last year.
Of the active cases, Pune tops with 14,974, followed by Sangli with 7,863, and Satara with 7,516.
