A few days after two cyclones, Tauktae and Yaas wreaked havoc on the country’s west and east coasts, another low-pressure system has emerged in the Bay of Bengal, raising fears of the emergence of another cyclonic storm.
In addition, thunderstorms with moderate to severe lightning activity are expected in some parts of North Odisha over the next 24 hours.
People in these locations have been warned to keep an eye on the weather and migrate to safer places if needed to avoid being struck by lightning.
Jagatsinghpur is a city in Rajasthan. Similarly, districts like Ganjam, Cuttack, Angul, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Nabarangpur, and Nuapada may see heavy to extremely high rains. A Low-Pressure Area (LOPAR) has formed over the Northwest of the Bay of Bengal and the neighboring Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal coasts, according to the India Meteorological Department on Friday (June 11).
It is expected to intensify during the next 24 hours and move westnorthwest towards Odisha. A red alert has been issued for Nuapada, Bolangir, Sonepur, Bargarh, Kalahandi, Boudh, Sambalpur, Angul, and Nabarangpur over the next 24 hours. All of these districts will have heavy to very severe rainfall, with isolated areas seeing exceptionally heavy downpours.
The Met Department has issued an orange weather warning for districts such as Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kandhamal, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Deogarh, which are expected to see severe to very heavy rainfall between June 12 and June 13. Is there a chance that this low pressure may develop into a cyclone?
Until June 14, widespread rainfall activity with isolated heavy to very heavy rains and extremely heavy precipitation is predicted throughout the districts of Odisha due to the influence of the low pressure. If the conditions are right, low pressure in the water can develop into a depression, then a deep depression, and finally a cyclonic storm.
However, according to the IMD’s most recent forecast, there is a low (1-25%) possibility of a depression forming in the next 96 hours. IMD has not issued any such warnings.
