Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain roared into the semi-final of the women’s welterweight category after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien-Chin by a split decision, ensuring at least a bronze medal for India at the Tokyo Olympics.
The 23-year-old Assamese boxer showed great technical ability in the first round, winning 3-2, and then sweeping the second round.
The Indian boxer continued her dominance in the final round, winning it 4-1 to win by a 4-1 split decision.
Lovlina has previously won two bronze medals at the World Championships and two bronze medals at the Asian Championships.
Whatever the colour of the medal, Lovlina will become the second Indian woman to win an Olympic medal, following the legendary Mary Kom. Mary Kom, who won a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympics, was eliminated in the round of 16 on Thursday in Tokyo.
At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Vijender Singh won India’s first ever boxing medal, a bronze.
