Coal is the main stay of Indian energy system and close to 70 % of the total electric generation is coal based. Apart from power generation, other sectors like steel , sponge iron cement ,paper etc. use coal as important ingredient and fuel.

With ‘Make In India’ initiatives and higher economic growth projection, the demand of coal is likely to increase over the years.

However, share of coal based power which is close to 70% at present, is expected to reduce to 50% with the increase in generation of of Renewal Energy by 2030.

The Government has taken following steps to introduce clean coal technologies in Coal sector to contribute in future energy security of the Country

Mission Coking Coal has been launched to augment coking coal production and supply and to meet the demand of steel sector. Under this mission, 12 coking coal washeries are being constructed having capacity of ~30 MTY.

The government has launched coal gasification mission with a target to gasify 100 MT by 2030. Under this mission, Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification projects are being constructed.

Government is producing CBM gases from Coal bearing areas. Government has also working on Coal to Hydrogen Mission. All these efforts will contribute in future energy security of the Country.

Under “Make in India mission”, Government is making all efforts to encourage to develop indigenous clean coal technologies in the country

This information was given by the Union Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The Union Government has launched Coking Coal Mission to meet the demand of domestic coking coal. Target of 140 million ton raw coking coal production by 2030.

To achieve the above target, the Government has taken steps to explore new coking coal blocks, auction of new coking coal mines, enhancing raw coking coal production and enhancing coking coal washing capacity.

The Coal India Limited (CIL) has also taken the following steps to increase the output/production of domestic raw coking coal including CIL has undertaken constant efforts to enhance coking coal production by capacity addition of existing coking coal producing mines and by opening new coking coal blocks.

The other efforts of CIL is Mass Production Technology has been introduced in coking coal producing UG mines of CIL to enhance the raw coking coal production.

The CIL has taken steps regarding offering of coking coal blocks for production to private sector (including some discontinued mines) on revenue sharing basis through MDO route.

The domestic raw coking coal production and dispatch during 2020-2021 was Public Sector production was 38.934 million tons (MT) and supply 38.150 million tons, Private sector production was 5.853 MT and supply was 5.850 MT.

According to National Steel Policy 2017, to achieve steel making capacity of 300 MTPA (including 180 MTPA through Blast Furnace route) by 2030, ~170 MT coking coal will be required by 2030.

Government has launched Coking Coal Mission to meet the demand of domestic coking coal as projected by the Ministry of Steel and has set target for raw coking Coal production by 2030.
