Chief Justice of India NV Ramana stated on Saturday that the Supreme Court may start live broadcasting court sessions from certain of the courtrooms soon and that the court is striving to get a comprehensive consensus on the subject.

“We are keen to start live proceedings for at least some of the courts of the Supreme Court. We are working out the logistics and working on the consensus of the full court. With the age of modern technologies, I have been given to understand that we can introduce this feature in a cost-effective manner,” the CJI said at the official launch of live streaming of court proceedings of Gujarat High Court.

According to Bar and Bench, live streaming is a vital component of Article 19 of the Constitution since it ensures public confidence and faith in the court.

Live broadcasting, according to the CJI, will help make the judicial system more visible for the public “To tell you the truth, even after 74 years of independence, the public still has a lot of misconceptions about how the judicial system works. These preconceived conceptions and misunderstandings obstruct access to justice by dissuading individuals from seeking a remedy. As a result, the CJI believes it is past time to de-mystify the justice delivery system.

He predicted that the formalization of live broadcasting would become a tool for preventing the spread of disinformation. At the moment, the public learns about court procedures via the media. The information from the courts is well filtered by the transmission agents. Due to the lack of context, there is often a transmission loss during the procedure, resulting in a misunderstanding of questions asked and observations made by the Bench. In order to humiliate or discredit the judicial system, vested interests exaggerate these misinterpretations. This lack of immediate access allows for misunderstandings to flourish.

In accordance with the Supreme Court’s decision of Swapnil Tripathi versus Supreme Court of India, the proceedings in the Gujarat High Court’s Chief Justice court have been aired on YouTube on an experimental basis from October 26, 2020. For over eight months, the trial was a success, with over 65,000 subscribers and 41 lakh views on the official YouTube account.,The Court decided to expand the experiment to all willing benches and make it official once the trial was successful and all parties gave favorable feedback.
