According to senior Government sources in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, over 40,000 “breakthrough” instances, or COVID-19 infections in persons who have been vaccinated, have been found in Kerala.
The Central Government has ordered Kerala to send all such casess for genome sequencing, which analyses the viral sample obtained from a diagnosed patient and compares it to other cases, amid worries about outbreaks.
According to reports, there is serious concern that the virus has evolved enough to bypass the protection conferred by vaccinations or past infection.
It’s still unclear if the fast-spreading Delta variant, which was originally found in India and has now travelled to countries all over the world, is fueling the outbreak.
The Pathanamthitta district has recorded the majority of breakthrough cases. After the first Covid dosage, 14,974 people were found sick in Pathanamthitta, while 5,042 people were found infected after the second vaccination shot.
