Five people were killed in an explosion on Tuesday in a ship of ONGC on a ship in Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) campus. According to the preliminary report, the people killed are workers who were working on the tender.
A CSL spokesman said that 11 people trapped inside the vessel were rescued. He has been admitted to various hospitals in the city. Three of these people have been admitted to a private hospital, of which more than 40 percent are prone to burn and their condition is serious.
Kochchi’s police commissioner, MP Dinesh, who arrived at the spot said, “This incident happened in the ship named Sagar Bhushan. People stranded in the vessel have been taken out. Now the situation is in control. He said, according to initial information, the explosion occurred in the water tank present in the front of the vessel. This incident took place at about ten o’clock on Tuesday, when the workers were going to get off the vessel for breakfast.
Sources said that all the tender and daily wages employed during the accident were payable workers. He told that detailed investigation is needed for the cause of the accidents. According to the initial investigation, the deaths of these people occurred due to the suffocation of smoke in the tanker.
Significantly, the operation of the Cochin Shipyard started in 1978 and it is the oldest and most important center for ship repair in the country.
