The first agreement on the water of the Kaveri river took place between Madras Presidency and Mysore Raj in 1892 and the second in 1924 and this settlement of 1924 was ended in 1974.

May 1990: The Supreme Court orders the Center to constitute the Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal. Tamil Nadu was seeking it since 1970. On June 2, 1990, the Center issued notification of the constitution of the Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal.

January 1991: Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal rejects Tamil Nadu application for ‘anterim’ relief; Tamil Nadu reached the Supreme Court against it.

April 1991: The Supreme Court has directed the Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal to consider Tamil Nadu’s application for interim relief.

June 1991:The Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal ruled interim. Karnataka’s order to leave 205 TMC water Karnataka issued an ordinance to cancel the order. Supreme Court intervened, canceled Karnataka Ordinance and retained interim order of Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal. Karnataka refused to accept it.

December 11, 1991: Interim decision was published in the Government of India gazette.

August 1998: The Center constituted the Kaveri river authority to ensure the implementation of the interim decision of the Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal.

September 8, 2002: The river authority, chaired by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has instructed Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of water for Tamil Nadu.

5 February 2007:The Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal passed the final verdict after 17 years. In relation to giving water to Tamil Nadu, Arbitration said both the agreements between Madras Presidency and Mysore Raj were valid in 1892 and 1924.

19th September 2012: In the seventh Kaveri river authority, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh instructed Karnataka to release 9000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu for the Biligundloo Dam.

September 28: The Supreme Court has convicted the Karnataka Government for not accepting the directive of the Prime Minister in the Kaveri river authority.

March 19, 2013: Tamilnadu requested the Supreme Court to direct the Water Resources Ministry to constitute the Kaveri Management Board.

May 10: The Supreme Court asked to constitute a panel from the Center to monitor the release of water from Kaveri.

May 28:Tamilnadu reached the Supreme Court, seeking compensation of Rs 2,480 crore from Karnataka for not following the orders of the Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal.

June 12: The Kaveri Monitoring Committee, on the orders of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal, asked Tamil Nadu’s request to give Karnataka the release of the water of Kaveri, that it is not practical.

June 14: Tamilnadu decides to sue contempt of Karnataka on the attitude of Karnataka on the Kaveri Monitoring Committee.

26th June: Till the demand of constitution of Kaveri Management Board, the Tamil Nadu High Court has reached.

June 28: Tamil Nadu filed contempt petition against Karnataka in the Supreme Court.

November 18, 2015: Karnataka opposes Tamil Nadu’s application to release water from Kaveri.

September 2, 2016:The Supreme Court asked Karnataka to consider the issue of giving Kaveri River water to Tamil Nadu. On September 5, the Supreme Court ordered Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day for the next 10 days.

Seven September 2016: On the orders of the Supreme Court, Karnataka has released the water of Kaveri for Tamil Nadu.

September 11, 2016: Karnataka appeals to the Supreme Court, requesting amendment in order to give water to Tamil Nadu.

September 12, 2016: Supreme Court rejects Karnataka’s petition to end the September 5 order However, to reduce the amount of water left daily from 15,000 cusec to 12,000 cusec.

September 19, 2016:The Kaveri Monitoring Committee asked Karnataka to release 3,000 cusecs of water daily in the month of the month.

14 July 2017: The Supreme Court said that keeping in view the interests of the people of both the states, it will consider the matter in a balanced way. Karnataka requested Tamil Nadu to give 132 TMC water to replace 192 TMC feet.

September 20, 2017: The Supreme Court has reserved the verdict.

16 February 2018: The Supreme Court ruled the final verdict. He asked Karnataka to release 404.25 TMC water each year for Tamil Nadu. The Kaveri Water Dispute Tribunal had earlier asked Tamilnadu to give 419 TMC water. The Supreme Court said that his decision on Kaveri water will be effective for next 15 years.
