BS Yediyurappa, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, announced today on Twitter that he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Mr. Yediyurappa said on Twitter that he was well but had been admitted to the hospital on the advice of doctors. On August 2, 2020, the 78-year-old Yeddiyurappa was admitted to the hospital after testing positive for coronavirus.
“Upon having mild fever, today I got tested for Covid-19 and my report has come out positive. Although I am doing fine, I am being hospitalized based on the advice of doctors. I request all those who have come in my contact recently to be observant and exercise self-quarantine,” the Karnataka Chief Minister tweeted.
The chief minister has been campaigning in the north Karnataka constituencies that will vote in bypolls on Saturday for the past few days.
Mr. Yediyurappa made the announcement just hours after convening an emergency meeting with Health Minister K Sudhakar and other top officials to address the state’s Covid crisis. Mr. Yediyurappa has ordered a lockout, but curfews have been imposed in seven cities until the 20th.
“Coronavirus cases have increased at an alarming rate. So, after a one-and-a-half-hour discussion with our police, we’ve come to a conclusion. On the 20th, we will make our final decision. Until then, things will remain the same ” during a press conference, Mr. Yediyurappa said.
Mr. Yediyurappa was admitted to Manipal Hospital last year after testing positive with his daughter Padmavathi.
Karnataka announced 14,738 new COVID-19 cases and 66 deaths on Thursday, taking the total number of infections to 11,09,650 and the number of fatalities to 13,112. Bengaluru Urban accounted for 10,497 of the new incidents. There were 96,561 active cases in all.
India recorded a new high of 2,17,353 daily coronavirus cases this morning, bringing the total number of cases to over 1.42 crore. According to the Union Health Ministry, Karnataka is one of the ten states that account for 79.10 percent of new infections.
