A Delhi court granted bail to Jawaharlal Nehru University professor Atul Johari who was arrested in the case of sexual harassment alleged by several girls today.

Duty Magistrate Ritu Singh allowed  the application for bail of the professor in the eight FIRs lodged against him. A fine of 30 thousand rupees is imposed on him for eight cases each filed against him. The professor filed a bail application and said that his career will be ended after being sent to jail. Students, professors and women rights organizations were demanding for his arrest after some students accused him of sexual harassment. Before this, the JNU students demonstrated outside the Vasant Kunj police station yesterday to demand for the professor’s arrest. Women rights organizations, including the All India Democratic Women’s Association and All India Women’s Cultural Organization, had performed outside the police station for the issue.

Johri’s lawyer, RK Wadhva, termed the allegations a “political conspiracy”.

“This was a political conspiracy and he was made a scapegoat. The children used to work with the professor. He had reprimanded them for their attendance and had asked them to attend classes. The students conspired to complain against him,” he claimed.
