Professor Mohd Zahid Ashraf, Head, Department of Biotechnology, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), will receive the Visitor’s Award 2020. The professor will be recognized for his work in solving the enigma of blood coagulation in high-altitude hypoxia. President Ram Nath Kovind will honor Professor Ashraf at a ceremony to be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Professor Ashraf will be honored in the field of Biological Sciences. According to a JMI release, his study has aided in the development of a method for early detection and treatment of thrombosis under exceedingly difficult environmental circumstances at high elevations.
“The outcome of his research has given insights to our understanding of blood clot formation on ascension to mountains, sports, pilgrimage and soldier’s working under hostile environments,” the JMI statement said.
Professor Ashrah’s achievements, according to JMI Vice Chancellor Najma Akhtar, are a recognition for the university’s research successes, and Professor Ashraf’s achievements will inspire other faculty members to pursue greatness in research and academics.
The institution, according to the Vice-Chancellor, is devoted to the government’s objective of increasing science education, research, and STEM promotion.
Professor Ashraf is a member of the Indian Academy of Sciences in Bangalore and the National Academy of Sciences in Allahabad. He is a prominent member of the Guha Research Council.
Professor Ashraf has also received the ICMR’s Basanti Devi Amir Chand and the DBT’s National Biosciences Award for his groundbreaking work on high altitude-associated thrombosis in the Indian population, according to the JMI release.
The Visitor’s Award has been given to a JMI Faculty for the second time. In 2015, the Cosmology and Astrophysics Research Team of JMI’s Centre for Theoretical Physics, led by Professor M Sami, earned the Visitor’s Award for research in the subject of contemporary challenges in Astrophysics and Cosmology.
