In the 2004 Ishrat Jahan suspected fake encounter case, a special CBI court today discharged police officers GL Singhal, Tarun Barot, and Anaju Chaudhary.
Mr. Singhal, Mr. Barot (now retired), and Mr. Chaudhary were granted their discharge applications by Special CBI Judge VR Raval.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) told the court on March 20 that the state government had refused to prosecute the three defendants.
The court stated in its October 2020 order that they “acted in the course of their official duties,” so the investigation department was obliged to seek trial permission.
On June 15, 2004, Gujarat police killed Ishrat Jahan, a 19-year-old woman from Mumbra near Mumbai, along with Javed Shaikh (alias Pranesh Pillai), Amjadali Akbarali Rana, and Zeeshan Johar in an ‘encounter’ near Ahmedabad.
According to the police, the four were terrorists attempting to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at the time.
However, the encounter was deemed a hoax by a high court-appointed Special Investigation Team, and the CBI lodged charges against multiple police officers.
