Ranchi, Jharkhand: The Indian Cricket team wore camouflage army caps to pay tribute to the Indian armed forces on Friday at the JSCA Ground during Ind vs Aus, 3rd one-day-international (ODI).
To pay homage to the fallen soldiers who lost their lives in the Pulwama attack, the Indian Cricket team on Friday donated their individual match fee to the National Defence Fund.
The cricket team also wore camouflage army caps which were given by Mahendra Singh Dhoni to his team-mates. MS Dhoni holds the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army.
Captain Virat Kohli appeared at the toss wearing the special cap who after winning the toss, opted to field, Kohli said: “This is a special cap, it’s a tribute to the Armed forces.”
“We’re all donating our match fees of this game to the families of the martyrs. I urge everyone in the country to do the same and stick to the families of our armed forces,” he told Murali Karthik at the toss.
Not just the players, even the Indian commentators were handed the cap. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar gave away the caps in the commentary box. He gave the cap to Sanjay Manjrekar, Murali Karthik, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan and Harsha Bhogle. Manjrekar returned the gesture by handing the cap to Gavaskar.
Pulwama attack was one of the deadliest attack, Jaish-e-Mohammed later claimed responsibility for the suicide attack which killed around 40 CRPF soldiers.
