According to the Union Health Ministry dashboard, India recorded 267,334 cases of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) on Wednesday, with 4,529 new fatalities. With this, the country’s total infection count increased to 25,496,330, while the death toll increased to 283,248.
As the second wave of Covid-19 in the country slows, the number of fatalities is expected to rise. People who were infected during the peak of the second wave and are now fighting for their lives, according to experts, are likely to add to the toll in the coming weeks if they do not recover.
Meanwhile, after more than ten weeks, Mumbai’s daily coronavirus case count has fallen below 1,000. The Maharashtra capital, which was ravaged by the dangerous second wave of Covid infections in April, had only 953 cases on Tuesday, the fewest since March 2. However, testing has dropped dramatically since April.
On Tuesday, the city reported 44 deaths in a single day. In Mumbai, the positivity rate was 5.31 percent, which was significantly lower than the April figures. Its recovery rate has also increased to 93%, with a doubling rate of 255 days.
On March 2, Mumbai reported 849 cases. The following weeks, however, were extremely difficult as it was hit by an unprecedented surge, bringing the city’s health infrastructure to the brink of collapse.
