The official toll of deaths in India related to the coronavirus has surpassed three lakh, bringing the nation into a gloomy global club with just two other members – the United States and Brazil.

Over the last few weeks, India has reported over two lakh daily cases – peaking at over four lakh cases – and thousands of deaths, resulting in collapsing health systems and long lines outside crematoriums and burial grounds.

India’s total case count has risen to 2,65,30,132 this morning, thanks to 2,40,842 new Covid cases. In just 24 hours, 3,741 deaths had been confirmed.

However, new state-by-state mortality estimates have pushed the total over the dreadful threshold.

According to experts, the official Covid numbers for the whole world are an undercount and those who die outside the scheme are not included. Moreover, despite the rapid and deadly rise, testing is either non-existent or very low in rural areas.

In terms of cumulative death tolls, India is now just behind the United States and Brazil.

With 589,703 deaths from 33,105,188 cases, the United States is the worst-affected region, followed by Brazil with 448,208 deaths from 16,047,439 cases.

According to the news service AFP, the novel coronavirus has killed at least 3,456,282 people worldwide since the epidemic began in China in December 2019.

The center attributes the extraordinary increase in cases to mutant virus strains and people’s failure to obey anti-Covid laws.

Experts, on the other hand, believe that mega events such as the Kumbh Mela and assembly polls have exacerbated an already precarious condition.

Because of the high caseloads, there are severe shortages of medications, hospital beds, and life-saving medical oxygen all over the world. Many people perished as a result of the lack of oxygen.

Epidemiologists also cautioned that if the viral vaccine campaign is not intensified, a third wave would be imminent. However, several states have reported that inoculation drives have slowed due to declining stocks.

The center has stated that there will be enough vaccines for everybody by the end of the year.
