Prime Minister Narendra Modi affirmed India’s commitment to providing safe habitats for its tigers and nurturing tiger-friendly ecosystems. He announced this on the occasion of International Tiger Day on Thursday.
The prime minister noted in a series of tweets that involving local communities is critical to India’s tiger conservation policy.
“Our centuries-old culture of living in harmony with all flora and fauna with whom we share our magnificent planet inspires us as well,” Modi remarked.
On International Tiger Day, Modi greeted wildlife lovers, particularly those who are dedicated to tiger conservation, noting that India is home to over 70% of the world’s tiger population. “We reiterate our commitment to protecting our tigers’ habitats and nurturing tiger-friendly eco-systems,” he stated.
According to him, India has 51 tiger reserves spread across 18 states, with the most recent tiger census in 2018 showing an increase in the tiger population.
Modi also mentioned that India achieved its goal of doubling the tiger population four years ahead of schedule, as set out in the St. Petersburg Declaration on Tiger Conservation.
On July 29, International Tiger Day is observed with the goal of promoting a global system for safeguarding tigers’ natural habitats and raising public awareness and support for tiger conservation concerns.
The Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit was established the day in 2010.
On this day, the 13 tiger range countries, including India, Russia, and China, joined hands and declared that by 2022, they will double the number of wild tigers within their range.
TX2 is the name of the project, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature. The countries also agreed to hold a Global Tigers Day every year on July 29 to promote tiger conservation.
The Saint Petersburg Declaration on Tiger Conservation, which was adopted by the participating countries, advocated a number of actions.
This is thought to be the most ambitious conservation aim for any species so far.
