After receiving treatment at a private hospital in Kerala’s Kozhikode district, a 12-year-old boy died on Sunday morning from Nipah virus infection.
A high-level meeting of the health department was reportedly held late Saturday night to discuss the outbreak of the virus that killed a number of people in the southern state in 2018. In the near future, another meeting will be held in Kozhikode.
The samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune, where the presence of the virus was confirmed. On Sunday at 5 a.m., the boy died.
On Sunday morning, Health Minister Veena George flew to Kozhikode to assess the situation.
All of the victim’s family members, as well as those who treated him, have been placed under quarantine. In Kozhikode, strict vigilance has been imposed. A team from the Union Ministry of Health is also en route to Kozhikode.
Already reeling from the coronavirus outbreak’s unrelenting spread, news of the Nipah virus death has only added to the state’s woes.
On May 19, 2018, the first Nipah virus disease outbreak in southern India was reported in the Kozhikode district. Until June 1, 2018, the state had seen 17 deaths and 18 confirmed cases.
