Chanel artistic director and iconic fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld died at the age of 85 in Paris, say reports.
Karl Lagerfeld, the artistic director of fashion brands Chanel, Fendi and Lagerfeld, died in Paris on Tuesday. Lagerfield was 85.
The news of Lagerfeld’s death came as a shock to the fashion world.
There was speculation about the designer’s health condition after he missed the final bow at Paris Fashion Week’s Chanel haute couture show for the first time ever. The Chanel show without Karl Lagerfeld, which took place last month, led to rumours about his health.
An official statement in January explained the reason behind his absence from the show as ‘feeling tired’. “Mr Lagerfeld, artistic director of Chanel, who was feeling tired, asked Virginie Viard, director of the creative studio of the house of Chanel, to represent him,” read the statement.
Chanel is yet to put out an official statement about Lagerfeld’s death but French media reports say that the artistic director of the brand has breathed his last.
Lagerfeld, who was one of the most prolific figures of the fashion world, was unwell for a few weeks and had missed several fashion shows. Born Karl Otto Lagerfeldt in 1933, in pre-war Germany, he changed his surname to Lagerfeld because it ‘sounded more commercial’.
Lagerfeld, who migrated to Paris from Germany, worked with Pierre Balmian as a design assistant.
