Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on Monday that, in response to an unexpected rise in Covid-19 cases in India, the company would provide funding of Rs 135 crore for medical supplies and to assist communities in general.

Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, tweeted, “I’m heartbroken to learn of India’s escalating Covid crisis. Google and its employees are donating $135 million to @GiveIndia and @UNICEF for medical supplies, organizations that serve high-risk populations, and grants to help share vital knowledge.”

In the last 24 hours, India has recorded 3.52 lakh new coronavirus cases. Since the start of the pandemic, this is the biggest single-day jump.

Pichai’s tweet also included a connection to a blog post on Google’s attempts to combat the deterioration of the situation.

Sanjay Gupta, country head and VP of Google India, wrote on his blog, “Today we’re announcing INR Rs. 135 crore (USD 18 million) in new funding for India. This includes two grants from Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, totaling INR Rs. 20 crores (USD 2.6 million). The first is to GiveIndia to provide cash assistance to families hit hardest by the crisis to help with their everyday expenses. The second will go to UNICEF to help get urgent medical supplies, including oxygen and testing equipment, to where it’s needed most in India. It also includes donations from our ongoing employee giving campaign — so far more than 900 Googlers have contributed INR Rs. 3.7 Crore (USD 500,000) for organizations supporting high-risk and marginalized communities.”

Google is assisting the Indian government in its vaccine contact strategy via YouTube. It held a workshop for 200 health officials to teach them how to use YouTube to target Indian communities with vaccine knowledge in several languages.
