Faridabad Police have arrested a GRP sub-inspector and his brother, a constable, for allegedly murdering the sub inspector’s 25-year-old daughter in an alleged “honor killing.”
Police were informed of the incident on Thursday when Sagar, the victim’s husband, an electrical engineer who works at a private business in Faridabad, approached them.
In his police report, he stated that he eloped with the victim, Komal, and married her on February 8. He claimed that the woman’s family had objected to their marriage because they belonged to different castes. Following the wedding, the couple approached the court for protection and were awarded it.
“Komal’s family approached the couple and assured them that the relationship was fine with them. As a result, on February 19, they got them engaged and returned her home,” said Faridabad Police PRO Sube Singh.
“After she returned home, Sagar claimed Komal told him over the phone that her family was still unhappy with their marriage,” he said.
Sagar received a phone call from Komal’s friend on Thursday, informing him that she had reportedly committed suicide and that her body had been cremated. The family reached Sagar’s parents and told them of the situation.
At first sight, it appears the victim’s uncle strangled her and they cremated her body,” said Inspector Sudeep Singh, SHO of Ballabgarh City police station, where the FIR was filed.
“The girl’s father, Sohanpal, and uncle, Shiv Kumar, have been charged with murder… The accused were taken into custody from their house on Friday, according to the PRO.
According to Arockiya Samy Kathir, the founder of the non-profit activist group Evidence, which has worked on honour killings in south India for years, women account for nearly 70% of honour killings in India.
In 2018, the Indian government requested that all states establish special cells made up of police and welfare officers, as well as a 24-hour helpline, to assist couples who are being harassed or seeking protection.
