London. If you also drink energy drink, be careful. In fact, a new research suggests that energy drinks can have negative side effects on young people. Research done at Waterloo University in Ontario, Canada, states that sales of such drinks should be restricted to teen agers under 16 years of age.
A recent study found that 55 percent of children aged 12 to 24 years had serious health effects after drinking energy drinks. These include heart attacks as well as heart rates. Researchers asked more than 2,000 young people how often they drink energy drinks like Red Bull or Monsters.
Researchers said that energy drinks can be more dangerous as compared to the way other energy drinks are consumed compared to other caffeinated drinks. Research found that 24.7 percent of those who consumed energy drink felt that their heart beat had increased.
At the same time, 24.1 percent of the people said that they were not able to sleep after drinking it. In addition, 18.3 percent of people experienced headache, 5.1 percent of nausea, vomiting or diarrhea and 3.6 percent of chest pain. However, the reason for concern among the researchers was that, these youths had only taken one or two energy drinks, yet they were experiencing such adverse effects.
About the study, Professor David Hammond said that there are no restrictions on children buying energy drink at the moment. With sales in grocery stores, advertisements are made while targeting children. He said that research findings suggest that there is a need to monitor the health effects of these products.
