Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with district magistrates on Tuesday, emphasizing that each district faces its own set of problems and that each one plays a critical role in the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic. The Prime Minister referred to the officials as “ground commanders,” saying that the only tools against the pandemic are localized containment areas, intensive monitoring, and exchanging accurate and full details with the public.
“Each district has its own challenges and we must aim to end the pandemic. Each one of you plays a crucial role in this fight. In a way, you are the field commander. The only weapons we have are aggressive testing, local containment zones, and providing correct information to the general public. There is also a need to curb the practice of black marketing and hoarding of medical supplies,” Modi told the officials from different states.
PM Modi asked officials to share their learnings and observations based on their experience in dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, as well as their input on any policy changes, during the video-conferenced meeting, which was attended by the district magistrates from 46 districts across nine states.
It is important to share your stories in order for effective models to be replicated. During the pandemic, we must take note of all segments of society and formulate plans accordingly, the Prime Minister said, adding that the pandemic must be brought under control.
Modi said it’s important to raise awareness about the Covid-19 vaccine and dispel any misconceptions about it. He also stated that plans are ongoing to increase vaccine supplies and provide stocks to states 15 days ahead of schedule.
PM Modi also praised the officials for continuing to operate despite their COVID status. “Some have sacrificed family members, but they put responsibility ahead of all else.” During the second wave of the pandemic, he said, a lot of attention must be paid to rural and remote areas.
