In the two days workshop of STARS (Strengthening Teaching-Learning and Results for States) project held in Bhopal by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, there was an in-depth discussion on strengthening the evaluation system.

In this workshop, senior officials of the Ministry of Education, Government of India and international education experts including key officials of 18 states expressed their views.

It was agreed in the workshop that the conclusions will be adopted for the betterment of education.

At the beginning of the second day of the workshop, Additional Secretary, Union Ministry of Education, Vipin Kumar, in a session organised on the topic of effective evaluation system, highlighted the effectiveness of the current evaluation systems and the need to improve them.

In the session, Madhya Pradesh Public Instructions Director Dinesh Singh Kushwaha gave a presentation on strengthening the evaluation system to improve the results of the students.

In the workshop, Director of the international organization Education Testing Service, Dr. Jones Bertling, emphasized on the need for capacity enhancement of evaluation and Major Vishal Sharma, Secretary of the Board of Secondary Education, Himachal Pradesh, in his presentation, emphasized on the need for innovation in evaluation methods.

During the discussion at the end of the session, experts from the education sector emphasized on further strengthening the evaluation methods for future education.

In the second session of the last day, the models of Vidya Review Centres operating in different states and integration of evaluation results for decision making were discussed.

While conducting the session, Chhattisgarh Education Secretary Pardeshi Siddharth Komal gave his presentation on the implementation of the VSK model.

During this, officials from the education departments of the states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha participated in the discussion.

After the session, officials from many states visited the Vidya Review Centre established in the Bhopal office of the State Education Centre and praised the evaluation system and functioning being operated there.

In the afternoon session on “Strengthening Assessment Cells in States”, Rajasthan’s Secondary Education Director Ashish Modi highlighted the need for assessment cells and its role.

Education Directors from Rajasthan, Odisha and Maharashtra participated in the panel discussion of this session and shared their experiences.

At the end of the workshop, Additional Secretary, Union Education Ministry Vipin Kumar presented the main findings of the two-day workshop and a roadmap to move forward towards further strengthening the assessment systems in India.

In the closing session of the workshop, representatives of all the states and the Central Government expressed their desire to adopt the best practices presented in the workshop as per the need in their respective states.
